Warrington EAC: Stream Health Educational Program Register Now!

Come join the Warrington Township Environmental Advisory Council (WEAC) on Saturday April 1, 2023, from 1:00 to 2:30pm, at the parking lot at John Paul Park at Lower Nike at the trail head for our Stream Health Improvement program.  This is a hands-on program to educate our residents about the important aspects of stream health, and what they can do to improve the health of streams in their own back yards. This is a fun educational program for adults and kids, alike! Please come dressed to walk into the stream or along the stream bank to look under rocks for critters, use handheld microscopes, look through binoculars, and identify wildlife by using field guides.

Healthy streams provide habitat for aquatic animals and other wildlife. There are several factors that indicate whether a stream channel or creek is healthy. By teaching landowners how they can monitor the health of waterways on their property, the quality of these waterways can begin to be improved. We will be partnering with the Penn State Extension, Master Watershed Stewards. We will be implementing a citizen science monitoring protocol called F.I.S.H., First Investigation of Stream Health. By implementing this initiative, property owners can detect early signals of stream improvements in their back yard.

We will learn about water clarity, stream bottom habitats, stream vegetation, scat, tracks and signs and other wildlife. The Bucks County Conservation District will also participate in this event to discuss and test for more specific types of water quality monitoring including stream temperature, water color, pH, dissolved oxygen, etc.

Another fun aspect of our stream health project will be to teach our residents about the importance of restoring and maintaining stream banks. We will provide instruction during this event on how to plant “live stakes”, for stream bank stabilization. Following our demonstration, we will provide participants with live stakes, free of charge, to plant along their stream channel in their own backyard.

Please register for this event through sign-up genius.
